FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERING –

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia defines consulting engineering as follows:

  1. A consulting engineering firm is retained whenever a client desires specialized knowledge, unbiased and independent engineering judgment, broad experience and the application of modern scientific and engineering techniques and practice.  A consulting engineering firm provides services to clients on an as-needed basis, which assures overall efficiency, economy and quality of performance.  The engineering firm may work for government, institutional, commercial or industrial clients directly or as part of a design team.  The dominant factor in the selection of a consulting firm is its qualifications to solve the problems under consideration.  Qualifications are a reflection of the firm’s experience, staff, and facilities, integrity and reputation, concept of the project and knowledge of local conditions.

Critical Stats

Fire protection engineering is a unique discipline of the engineering profession that builds upon the basic tools of several other engineering disciplines, e.g., mechanical, electrical, chemical and civil engineering.  Fire protection engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to protect people and their environment from destructive fire.

A fire protection engineer (FPE) by education, training, and experience:

  1. (1)is familiar with the nature and characteristics of fire and the associated products of combustion;

  2. (2)understands how fires originate, spread within and outside of buildings/structures, and can be detected, controlled, and/or extinguished; and

  3. (3)is able to anticipate the behavior of materials, structures, machines, apparatus, and processes as related to the protection of life and property from fire.

The fire protection engineers  are often responsible for determining what the fire hazards are in a proposed new or existing facility, and researching and designing fire safety systems such as alarms and sprinklers to reduce that hazard. They also often oversee the installation, maintenance, and operation of these systems and may be responsible for their approval by the government or other agency responsible for ensuring a safe environment for people, operations, data and property.

Thus the domain of the fire protection engineer is diverse and ever-changing.  A fire protection engineer fulfills a broad range of duties, all in some way related to fire.  Fire protection engineers have always been in great demand by corporations, educational institutions, consulting firms and government bodies around the world.
